Braces are orthodontic appliances that straighten teeth and correct malocclusions (bite problems). They consist of brackets that adhere to your teeth with a wire running through them. Braces work by placing gradual force on your teeth to shift them into the correct position.
Over 18 months to three years, braces can improve the function and appearance of your teeth.
While traditional braces used to be your only orthodontic treatment option for straightening teeth, Schwartz Orthodontics boasts several choices:
Traditional braces include metal brackets, wires, and elastic bands. The elastic bands wrap around the brackets and wires to gradually tighten them. With traditional braces, you can choose from many different colors of elastic bands to change their appearance.
The main difference between traditional and Damon braces is that the latter operates on a self-ligating system. Rather than relying on elastic bands to tighten your braces, Damon braces straighten teeth with just an archwire and brackets. As a result, they’re typically more comfortable, easier to clean, and require fewer tightening appointments than traditional braces.
In addition to traditional metal brackets, Damon braces are also available in clear ceramic brackets. Ceramic braces are more discreet than metal options because they blend in with the color of your teeth. Therefore, they’re more aesthetically pleasing. However, they’re also more fragile and easier to stain.
Invisalign is a system of clear aligners that correct orthodontic issues without brackets or wires. Clear aligners are translucent, removable, and custom-made to the exact shape and size of your teeth. Invisalign allows you to brush, floss, eat, and drink without worry. Many people also find them more comfortable than braces.
Another benefit of Invisalign is that it typically takes less time than braces to straighten your teeth. Some people can see noticeable improvements within 6-18 months. However, they can’t correct as many orthodontic issues as braces.
Braces and clear aligners can correct a wide range of orthodontic issues, including:
After an orthodontic evaluation, Dr. Schwartz can determine which type of braces is right for you.
